The world cup is on our doorstep and we need to embrace the moment, join in the fun and excitement and get into the mood. I strung some flags up outside my front door and I love the way in which they flutter so quietly in the wind. As I was working on a layout for the world cup using all the flags, it struck me as to how similar some of them were. So here is the quick quiz I designed for you to test your knowledge about the countries and their flags being represented here in South Africa during this wonderful event.


WORLD CUP FLAG QUIZ


1. How many flags contain the colour green? 10


2. What do the flags of Greece, England, Denmark and Switzerland all have in common? A cross


3. Carefully study the following flags: France, Netherlands, New Zealand, USA, Australia, Serbia, Paraguay, Chile, Korea DPR, Slovakia. What is their common denominator? Red, white and blue colour scheme


4. How many countries have stars on their flags? Name them. 11
New Zealand, Cameroon, Algeria, Slovenia, Australia,
Ghana, Chile, Honduras, Korea DPR, Brazil


5. Which country’s flag contains a rhombus? Brazil


6. What does ‘Yin and Yang’ mean and where is it represented in the flags? (P.S. watch out for the Yin and Yang class in the second half of the year!) Korea Republic. Yin means dark and cold, while Yang means bright and hot. Chinese understanding of how things work.


7. There is a subtle difference between the Italian and Cote d’Ivoire Flags. What is it? Italy is red, white and green. Cote D’Ivoire is orange, white and green.


8. How many flags show the Southern Cross? Can you name them? 3
New Zealand, Australia and Brazil (look carefully)


9. How many flags show the country’s coat of arms? Can you name them? 7 Mexico,
Spain, Paraguay, Slovenia, Slovakia, Portugal, and Serbia


10. What do the colours in the South African flag mean?

Red for bloodshed,
Blue of open blue skies,
Green for the land,
Black for the black people,
White for the European people and

Yellow for the natural resources such as gold.

11. The Netherlands and Serbian flags are exactly the same or are they?

Just the order of the red white and blue is different. Serbia is red, blue, white.

12. Which country’s flag has 50 stars representing the number of states in the country? USA


13. How many countries use a circular shape on their flag? Can you name them?8
Argentina, Korea Republic, Algeria, Japan, Brazil, Korea DPR and Portugal


14. What is the difference between the New Zealand and the Australian flags? NZ has 4 red stars with a white outline and the stars are 5 pointed Australia has 6 white stars and the stars are 7 pointed.


15. How many countries from the southern hemisphere and how many from the northern hemisphere are being represented at the world cup? 8 Southern 24 Northern


16. How many countries will be represented from each continent?

Europe 13
Africa 6
South America 5
North America 3
Asia 3
Australasia 2


17. Which is the most popular flag represented at the world cup in 2010? South Africa
