Ephemera

What does one do with all the souvenirs that you collect whilst traveling?
This single page idea should help you. It is perfect for the back of an album.

Arrange paper bags of varying sizes, together with tags and labels that you may have collected to create a layered look. Place this on a backing sheet of paper, place a piece of ribbon over the left hand edges and stitch by machine through all the layers to keep them together.

Stick this whole layered piece onto the page protector and
slip the background page inside the page protector.

Add photos, labels, postcards and any other ephemera you may have to the various layers.
Tuck cash slips and any extras inside the packets.
You can embellish the layers with rubber stamping, buttons and Washi tape.

Wild life or small little faces would work well. Plus you also need four horizontal (landscape) photos 12cm x 9cm and one horizontal (landscape) photo 15cm x 10cm.
ACTION - 'Capture the Memories' with pretty colours to make this fun 'View Master' themed page. This page requires five photos cropped to 8cm x 8cm and eight photos cropped to 5½ x 5½cm that would match with the above colour scheme.

The Yellow Team

The kits for the YELLOW TEAM each contained the same set of patterned papers, but the large Heidi Swapp die cut with a title word varied from kit to kit.

I made a page using a sketch, but the measurements for the collage on the right hand page turned out to be wrong. So to solve the problem I added extra photos to enlarge the collage.

A few of the ladies used my page to jump start theirs, but made a few changes. Here Hayley used the Swiss Dot card stock for the background and not the diagonal stripe. She also added a large potjie to frame her word die cut, because the pale yellow just didn't show up against the background as well.

Nicole made her collage much larger and she also glazed the glasses on the aprons with Glossy Accents which made them look very realistic.

Alison took a completely different approach, using the black paper for the background and spread the three aprons around the page to create a visual triangle. She also added strip journaling, a circle and some Washi tape.

Reinette cut up the black paper and also cut the chevrons to create a zigzag border.

Great pages ladies!

The Blue Team

For the 2013 Scrap booking / Fly fishing weekend I packed three kits so that the ladies could scrapbook the previous year's Potjiekos Competition. Each lady got the same supplies and could design her page to her liking.

This post features the pages of the BLUE TEAM who cooked a lamb potjie.

Glenda designed this page and was kind enough to let some of us scrap lift it!

I changed my layout by using different photos, and featuring each of the men wearing real fabric chefs hats from Jolee's Boutique. I also added some machine stitching to the white card stock.

A close up of the real fabric hats that I added to the three small photos.

This page was made by Alison. She used the cup cake papers to add an embellishment on the sides and basically turned the page around so that the frill was at the top.

Jeanette made chef's hats from the pleated, white card stock frill.

Neva added her title to the enlarged photo making the colour pop.

Nicole placed her pleated card stock frill facing upwards.

Reinette placed her frill at the top of the page and used the Vote Blue photo as her title and focal point.
Glenda made a second page using a potjie cut on a Silhouette and...
the flap on the right hand side lifts up to reveal her journaling and the all important recipe!

June Kit of the Month

The June Kit of the month was based on an original page designed by Glenda Viljoen. I have just done a simplified version of it for you. Because it is so difficult to print the white colours, I have put it on the blog as a reference for all of you who subscribe to the kit of the month. Enjoy making it.

Run out of ink?

Page by Neva Van Rooyen

  • Do you do home printing?
  • Have you ever run out of ink in the middle of printing?
  • What do you do with these dud photos?
  • Scrap them of course!
  • Choose your colour scheme carefully to enhance the colour.
  • Stick to a monochromatic (single) colour scheme otherwise it can become difficult to get the colours to match.
  • In this example the title has a play on words to pick up on the unusual colours of the photos.

Knit the cutest pompom hat

  • Use double knitting cotton yarn.
  • Using size 10 needles cast on 70 (80) stitches and rib 4 rows.
  • Change to size 8 needles and knit 10cm garter stitch. Change colours every 4 rows.
  • Cast off.
  • Sew seam up the back and across the top.
  • Make 2 multi-coloured pompoms and sew onto each corner.

Pen Stitching

I made this page in a class taught by Glenda Viljoen. I used photos of my sister and I taken in 1979.

You don't need a sewing machine to stitch on your page. This stitching technique is quite simple: Prick holes with a dressmaker's wheel or even freehand with a pin and ruler, then join the dots with a black pen. Stitching done in a flash.

Country Memories

This is a close-up of the May kit of the month called 'Country Memories'.
It will be ideal with photos from Dullstroom to Darling, Clarens to Cullinan or Parys to Paternoster! Part of the technique this month is to make you own chalk board.
It is easy! Paint some Balsar wood with blackboard paint,
sand the edges and write on the board with blackboard chalk.
String up with jute string and embellish with autumn leaves,
filmstrips and metal bits and pieces.
Enjoy!
